Backert Labs linestage preamps have a total of four outputs.
Each output is a pair (left and right channel).

Two of the output pairs are for RCA cables. The other two are fully balanced, for XLR cables (see photo).
So the question arises:
Can multiple outputs be used at the same time?
The answer is, yes.
And it doesn’t matter whether you’re using multiple power amps, or a combination of amps and subwoofers.
So, I can use an XLR output while also using an RCA output?
Yes. No problem.
In fact, you can use all four of the output pairs at the same time, if you want.
Actually, there is a 5th output on every Backert Labs linestage preamp. We include a “RECORD OUT” which always outputs full volume (the full volume of your music source).
Labeled REC OUT, this full-volume output pair cannot be controlled by the volume knob. And it will not mute if you throw the mute switch. Because it always delivers full volume, we cover this output with plastic caps, as shown in the photo. By requiring you to do a little work to access them, we hope they will never be connected unintentionally.
REC OUT is for those who want to make recordings (going to a tape deck, or a CD burner that accepts analog signal), or those who want to run their music out to a headphone amplifier that has its own volume control.
