Backert Labs introduces ‘Optik Phono’ equalizer for DS Audio cartridges
The first DS Audio equalizer to support two tonearms. Only the second to feature tubed amplification.
WILMINGTON, Feb. 2, 2026 – “Preamp specialists” Backert Labs (www.BackertLabs.com) have introduced their new Optik Phono 1.1™ equalizer for the acclaimed DS Audio optical cartridges.

Caught on display in Now Listen Here’s room at the recent Capital Audio Fest, the Optik Phono 1.1 is shown supporting a VPI Avenger with stereo and mono tonearms
Priced at $11,500 and utilizing two 12AU7 tubes, it is the first phono preamplifier for DS Audio cartridges to feature two tonearm inputs, enabling music lovers to switch between arms with the touch of a front-panel switch.
This allows the use of a second DS Audio cartridge (such as one of the new mono designs, or a different stereo model) without the need for multiple equalizers.
As with Backert Labs’ linestage preamps, the Optik Phono is voiced for sound that is dynamic, rhythmic and effortlessly natural.
The features and technology inside are unlike anything currently on the market:
- In addition to the Input 1 / Input 2 toggle switch, the front panel includes a high/low gain switch, allowing precise matching with any system, as well as a mute switch
- The Optik Phono automatically deactivates the internal LED and decorative external illumination for the cartridge that is not currently being used, preserving longevity
- Gain stage incorporates four distinct features that extend tube life, making the Optik’s tubes essentially “forever” devices
- Backert’s tube auto-biasing circuit, unheard of in tubed phono preamps, ensures that each 12AU7 or equivalent tube always performs at its best
- Two outputs: fully-balanced XLR output, and unbalanced RCA output
- Two of Backert’s unique power supplies in dual-mono configuration for the audio signal, driven by the famously nimble and accurate PTFE type of capacitor (an advantage offered only by Backert Labs, due to the design of its patented power supply)
- A separate Backert power supply for the “photo-detector” – the analog device in DS Audio cartridges that translates light into audio signal – this power supply is driven with V-Caps premium oil-damped ODAM capacitors
- Solid silver wire deployed in key locations
- The renowned Gaia feet by IsoAcoustics, and
- A substantial bottom panel machined from solid, deliberately unfinished brass supporting the circuit board to deliver the most natural sound possible.
Of course, those with a single DS Audio cartridge will equally benefit from the Optik Phono’s dynamic sound. As is common with such equalizers, the Optik Phono is “DS Audio-only”.
The Optik Phono is presented with a heavy, silver-colored anodized aluminum front plate. Black is a no-cost option. As for the chassis, standard color is black; optional colors are available for an additional $300 for those who prefer a more contemporary touch.
The Optik Phono is now available beginning and can be purchased directly from Backert Labs or any of its dealers. It is designed and built by hand in the U.S. by seasoned amplifier designer Bob Backert and his son Gary. More information is available at www.backertlabs.com.
