That Door

Backert Labs preamp tube access door

The original metal tube door on our Rhythm 1.1 preamp, which has now been replaced by a hardened acrylic tube door that allows you to see the glow of your tubes as the music plays.

The door on the top panel of every Backert Labs preamp gives you easy access to your tubes.

Two 12au7’s are beneath it, and you don’t need a screwdriver or anything else to get at them.

Removing the tube door on any Backert Labs preamp is so easy a child can do it.  Which is why under the tube door, we surround the tubes with a protective enclosure that protects little fingers from reaching past the tubes

to the circuit board.

We call the enclosure around our tubes “the gondola” because its shape reminds us of the boats found in the canals of Venice.  It is made of aluminum, which helps to insulate the tubes from the effects of RFI and other types of airborne radiation.

The photos at right and below show the current version of the tube door found on all Backert Labs preamplifiers.

The tube door is held in place by magnets on the left and right side, which allow easy removal with the flip of a finger in the tube door’s round notch, shown below.
