A semi-dangerous topic today: for serious audiophiles who enjoy The Beatles and wish they could hear them recorded in a modern studio staffed with all the best engineers and producers, what is the closest you can get to such an experience with the available Beatles tracks out there?
Although we are a tube preamp manufacturing company, we are also music lovers. We admire the musicality of the Beatles catalog, and our staff has over 40 years of experience playing in various live bands. So we have at least some basis to express a view on today’s question.
No Excuses: Of course, this topic deserves many disclaimers and various attempts to excuse ourselves from ridicule and liability, but we aren’t going to do any of that.
Here goes.
The Winner: The best-sounding, most “audiophile” Beatles track that we are aware of is Mother Nature’s Son, from a White Album LP made in the UK or Germany. A good option for an LP to use would be from the Blue Box set containing all the Beatles LP’s.
Why: We select this track because of the quality of the vocal and the pure, natural sound of the instruments, along with the dynamics in this recording.
Other Options: That said, we would love to be proven wrong. One possible option here: we haven’t carefully studied various pressings of the Let It Be Naked LP. Perhaps there is a track here that outperforms our selection.
Another possible option: Within You Without You, from a Sgt. Pepper LP made in the UK. This has proven to be a stunning recording in several different settings.
